To Him that Overcomes
“To him that overcomes.” Jesus says seven times in the book of Revelation that He will give unspeakable reward.
Like what?
Well, the overcomer gets to eat from the tree of life. He will not be hurt by the second death. He will eat of the hidden manna and will sit on the throne with Christ and reign with Him, etc., etc.
Wait a minute, I’m saved by the blood of Christ, isn’t that enough? God knows that we’re going to sin until the day we die. Besides Jesus paid it all and who am I to think I can live a holy life? Only One is holy! Besides, we need to be careful that we are not delving into works righteousness.
But that’s not what Jesus says writes Andree Seu Peterson in her article for WORLD magazine. He says, “to him that overcomes.”
God expects us to go to war. When was the last time we went to war over our besetting sins?
Paul encourages us to be a good soldier and to fight the fight. While John reminds us that we are overcomers because greater is He that is in us tis greater han he that is in the world!!
“To him that overcomes” gives incentive to those saints who are dangerously resigned to the besetting sins in their lives.
Maybe it’s mastering a temper or a tongue, forgiving a hurt or holding a grudge, or learning to be content. Sometimes it’s a little thing (we think) that we hold on to and refuse to submit to the Lordship of Christ.
I have a handwritten note taped to my closet door that reads, “Godliness with contentment gives greater JOY!” Practicing discipline helps me to be more grateful and shapes my heart for deeper pleasures.
Yet, note-on-the-door ‘n all, it has still been a struggle. I love shopping!!
Whether it’s thrift stores or visiting garage sales, I’m like a pirate on a treasure hunt. And maybe just a tad like that woman in the parable of Jesus who calls her friends together to say, look what I found!!! Okay, it doesn’t exactly fit…but the enthusiasm of finding a good deal and wanting to share it with friends is still there.
In fact, my daughters and I will often send pics to one another saying, check out my new shoes or whatever is the latest-bestest find. And of course, we always love it!!!
Over the years, I have sensed Somebody poking and prodding my heart.
Not because it is wrong to shop or find good deals, but because maybe I good use a little more contentment. Maybe spend a little less money. And maybe this is one area where God is saying, “Give it to Me. Can you trust Me? Give Me your all.”
Years ago, as a new believer, I remember learning this song at camp.
“One by one He took them from me, all the things I valued most until I was empty-handed every glittering toy was lost. Then at last I comprehended with my silly mind so dull, that God could not pour His riches into hands already full.”
It was a hard lesson at the time. But He filled me. Now many years later, I am reminded once again (if not, daily) to trust Him with my heart.
Dear friend in Christ, lift up your hands. If the LORD is nudging, release what you are holding tightly and let Him fill them with His treasures!!!!
