Where’s a Camera When You Need One?
I ran a quick errand to my daughter’s and ducked my head into the kids’ rooms. There was a time they all came running to the door to get their Mimi hug. But alas, they are now teens, and I have to go find them. Ha!!!
I knocked on my grandson’s door and peeked into his room and found him sitting at his desk with earphones. Drums to the side and a guitar leaning against the wall. He was obviously listening to music of some sort, smiled and got up to greet me.
Well, I was not about to settle for a simple hug. No sirree.
Titus, I said, you need to give homage. And lo and behold, he actually got down on the floor with his arms stretched out and bowed. Man o man, where is a camera when you need one?!!
I looked at my hubby, and he grinned. No camera. Crumbum!!! We’ll just have to chalk this one to memory…and a Coffee Break.
A couple of weeks ago, I took my two teen grandsons out for breakfast. Yep, the same one mentioned above and his cousin. Both had turned fifteen. We had a blast!!
You might wonder, what does a g’ma talk about with her grandsons?
I find asking questions go a long way. What music are you listening to? Why do you like this group? Are you reading any books? Any favorite movies, lately? So, given the world’s situation (blah, blah, blah), what do you think we should do? That was a good question, and I love seeing their minds rattling.
We must’ve got up and grabbed at least three cups of coffee. (It was one of those breakfast places where they set out several thermoses of flavored coffee. Yum!!!)
Finally, I asked if they were ready to go home or if there was something they would like to do. One of them said, you know sometimes the most fun times are when things aren’t planned. Then after a moment’s pause, he said, well, things that are planned can be fun, too and we all laughed.
With that, we headed towards the parking lot and hopped in the car.
Okay, guys, where should we go?? Do you want me to go straight or turn? Quick! Quick! Make a decision, I’m driving…
I ended up turning into a fancy neighborhood. We oohed ‘n ahhed at all the houses, picked out our favorites, then went to the mall. This was a hoot! We walked into stores that I usually just pass by, checked out some expensive watches and name-brand sneakers, then made our way to the sunglasses shop where they tried on multiple pairs.
Sensing they might want to just walk the mall for an hour or so, I gave them the go-ahead, grabbed a Diet Coke and did some reading while they went on their excursion. Gave them a little change to grab a drink, then stopped at a favorite store on the way home and let them pick out a t-shirt or a pair of shorts.
You would’ve thought I gave them a million dollars.
“Mimi,” they said, “This was the BEST birthday date ever!!
Not every get-together with the kids or grands results in talks about God. Sometimes we just have a good time, but one thing I have seen is when the relationship is there and they know they are loved; they are more apt to talk freely. And when you least expect it…a sweet conversation of faith occurs.
“For we will not conceal them from our children, but tell the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and His strength and wondrous works that He has done.” Ps. 78:4
