Birthdays, Breakfast & Boggle

Birthdays in our family are big deals! Homemade signs are taped on walls, mirrors and the front door. A hangover from my growing up days. Come to think of it, I’m not sure how far back it goes. It could very well be that my mom’s mom made homemade signs, and her mom’s mom made homemade signs. Ha!!

At any rate, it’s a great way to wake up on a birthday morning to colorful signs, hearts and hand drawn balloons.

In a world of billions of people, it’s good to know that somebody in this world thinks we’re special!!!

And that’s what families are for…well, at least one of the reasons☺

With sixteen grandchildren it keeps me hopping. I barely finish one birthday and it’s time for the next. But you will not catch me waving any white flags here!! No sirree. These kids will be up and grown, and before you know it whatever opportunities childhood affords will soon be gone.

It’s hard to believe this is my third time around.

Learning about the world for the first time through my own eyes, then through the eyes of my children and now my children’s children.

The world has changed. Yet in many ways it has not. Even the biblical Job celebrated birthdays…and thousands of years later, we’re still celebrating!!!!

I got up early Saturday morning to take my grandson out to breakfast. He had just turned twelve and had not been to a nearby breakfast café. We ordered hot waffles (so the butter can melt in the little pockets), eggs and bacon. I had an entire carafe of coffee all to myself while he enjoyed a tall glass of cold apple juice.

We talked about books and movies.

Then walked outside browsing in storefront windows and listened to the birds.

The birds surprised me. He likes listening to birds. So, do I. We talked about the funny sounds they make and wondered what they were saying. And we marveled at God’s design.
It was a sweet connection.

A time of sharing something we both enjoy.

Later we grabbed a Frappuccino with lots of whipped cream sprinkled with cinnamon, browsed a nearby bookstore and toy store, and played five rounds of Boggle.

He won four of the five.

I laughed and told him. “This means war!!!! This grandma is not giving up. I’m going home and brushing up on my word skills.”

I drove home mulling over another special memory tucked away.

I hope my grandson feels special because he is. Each of my children and every one of my grands are special!!! Isn’t that how God makes us feel? His heart so big, His love so deep and He is everywhere. There is no place where we can go where He is not!!! Our God fills the entire universe. Now, let your mind wrap around that one!!!

Oh, may the LORD open our hearts and minds to “comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that we may be filled with the fullness of God.”

I love it. Love so rich and deep that it surpasses anything I can imagine!!!

LORD, fill me with this love.
